JB4 Audible (to compliment Visual) indicator possible?
(Attn: Terry)
Wondering if anyone had ever asked Terry/JB4 to make add an optional audible “JB4 Is now active / oil is at 160° plus” alert/indication? I always drive through town with my left hand at 12:30-1:00 steering wheel position, which kinda covers my turn-signal indicators, so a lot of times I’ll miss hazard-double-flash and then wonder if it went off yet or not. Think it’d be great to have the option of a seatbelt gong or similar to be synchronized with the lights. Disable it if you don’t want it. Enable it if you do. Maybe I’m the only one? Or maybe it’s not possible. ?? // Radar // |
Heh, its only an issue for those of us with e60's, everyone else gets an oil temp gauge where we get MPG...
|
Ahhh, true. Some (non-e60 owners) may still appreciate having it though, don’t you think? I know for me at least, seeing that double-flash is like someone waving a checkered flag! Lol
|
Totally understand this, with my 535i I have the same minor annoyance. :)
Easy solution: use JB4 mobile app on USB cable to monitor temps. |

If anyone knows the canbus command to make something gong we could certainly program it in. :)

SWEEEET!
Thanks for considering it, Sir! |
This would be awesome. I have my wheel adjusted in such a way that it blocks my indicator lights unless I dip my head down low. Subscribed.

I’m going to try to drum up some Can-BUS-expert business to this thread...

This is a tough one....
The way to determine the canbus id for something is it has to be recorded on the network while the gong happens. So first step I think is to have a strategy to regularly cause the gong to go off so that the network packets can be recorded and THEN the analysis can be done to look over the data packets and decipher which ones it could be. Perhaps setting the hour gong on the clock then manually changing the time to cause the gong to go off - repeat over and over to capture enough samples to find it in the data? Any other ideas on how to make the gong go off manually? |
Drive with no seatbelt ? I dont remember anymore if it would chime like that. I coded all the seatbelt warnings out.
|
Drive with a door or trunk open should do it pretty quickly, too.
|
these are great ideas... but.... driving causes a lot of extra data on the network and the timing of the gong with a timestamp in the data would be problematic.
Think along the lines of there 100,000 data points and the gong chimed ten times. To find this event one needs to have an idea of when it occurred to attempt to identify the address/data. |
What about just adjusting the tone down?
CD/Multimedia or Settings Tone Volume settings Gong - set gong to lowest level. Once it gets to the lowest limit, i believe it will just keep gorging until you stop it (pressing down on controller knob) EDIT: ANY level would work I guess, and you could do this with car sitting in driveway on accessory mode with engine off. ??? |
The only practical way to isolate commands like that is using some sort of tool like INPA that triggers the sound/action on demand. You can than intercept that request on the CANbus.
|
how about gong for key in ignition with door open? No need for the car to be running
|
Why not just flash the car with a backend flash. Not much happens because the car is not technically running.
|
Quick win for me is to build this into the JB4 app. I would also request audio feedback for when the car goes into Limp.
The app will also allow for Voice audio feedback, like stating the reason for the failsafe. I.e if the car goes into limp, you get a Siri type voice (or Terry) saying " Failsafe - AFR Lean" or "Warm-up Completed" |
That would be cool, as long as we all had options as to what and how much we want via audio.

I don't have my hardware set up for this kind of work anymore unfortunately. A while back I did a lot of CANBUS sniffing and isolating the data to reproduce messages. Gonna have to leave this for someone else to figure out :( |
