BigBoost Turbo gets its hands on a B58 M240i! -
04-09-2017, 08:25 PM
Hi all,
Last week we got our own M240i for parts development. After doing some baseline runs at the dyno, we finally got to work on it. Our plans are manufacturing a stage 3 turbo and a port-injection, both to be released by late May. Stages 1 and 2 with direct replacement turbocharger will follow, no estimate time of arrival for those.
We'll keep you updated on progress!

That dyno is on a stock tune? Also why the MPH axis on the bottom. All dynos should be plotted for RPM as it yields much more info.

The turbo has a flapper just like the stock one to which the actuator connects to.

We got the car in, put it on the dyno and did a couple of fast baselines, we just did not hook the RPM clamp. But it is a stock B58 engine, so we know what the torque is.
Torque should be around 340ish @5,400 RPMs

What stage is in the images you posted above...? can you post some stock turbo to upgraded for comparison sake? Very interested in these. Are they ball bearing and are they VSR balanced?

That is stage 3, we are working on the new impeller and turbine wheel to place in the stock cartridge. VSR balanced. Non-Ball Bearing, but in June we will come up with ball-bearing. In the first post there is a comparison.

Juan,
Thank you for the fast response! Very interested in the ball bearing upgrades. I see these are master power turbos. How do these compare in terms of quality/reliability to the competition?

We chose this brand because we have used these since 2007 in all our turbo kits for many different car manufacturers. We say this by experience after using over 6000 units during this period of time. We have been in the factory located in Brazil and have a very good relationship with the company. It is an all in-house production factory to control it's high standards of quality. In fact, Master Power is the manufacturer for some Mahle turbochargers that are used in OEM well-known car makers.
Compared to other brands, the advantages are very significant. For example, with most turbo makers you can only get what they offer. There is no in-between, with Master Power we can get any turbo made according to our spec needs. Also this turbochargers all come standard with a 7 blade billet aluminum compressor wheel at no additional cost.
As we mentioned above, we found these units very reliable after using many turbos in all this time with less than 1% failures.
At the PRI show 2016 we got many customers telling us stories about how strong the turbos are after abusing them for many many years.

How so? PURE made a stage 1 in late October last year. I asked Peter@Pure if they had plans for stage 2 and he said no. Now my friend spoke to Charles@Pure and he said stage 2 is almost complete and they aren't offering credit to stage 1 for the B58... so Pure is odd to me lately. Dinan is also working on a couple turbos with Vargas for the platform. I'm all for healthy competition.

I don't think is too soon for the platform, we have had people asking for it since we released the N55 in October last year. Also there are now BMS goodies for it and pretty soon we will have a bench tuning solution, market is growing and people will start needing a bigger turbo solution.

We got to do a road test for now, tomorrow morning we will get to do some dyno runs. We feel like the car is strong, even though on high RPMs boost gets low and it stops pulling (Map 0), we will get better fuel tomorrow and see if we can run map 2 and see what it can do!
