The tolerances of your engine are spec’d to be “correct” when your engine is warm, not when it’s cold. So if you start applying huge loads when your parts are not the right size, you’re going to get excessive wear and tear. In fact, even if you odn’t apply excessive load, the fact the engine is moving when the tolerances aren’t at the right levels causes wear. Most wear and tear happens at startup (when tolerances are at the worst and lubrication is lacking)
Letting cars “warm up” on the driveway is literally the dumbest thing that people do in the winter. What you should do is literally start it up, wait like 10 seconds and drive off normally, applying light load once the oil pump has managed to send oil to all the parts of the engine is the quickest way of getting your engine up to temp. Idling on the driveway does you nothing.
