Spark Plugs, Bosch or NGK .205? -
03-09-2015, 02:54 AM
Hey,
I've now spark plugs from BMS,
but i read on forums that some are using NGKs with reduced gap to 0.205
whats the difference and what would motivate to go for NGKs?
what does reducing the gap does, performance wise?

For tuned vehicles I prefer the NGKs gapped at .022.

I've had a tooth Fall off into my cylinder trying to use the NGK's.
I've also had them break during installation, when I get new plugs down the road I'll probably go with Bosch.
Just my experience, I could just be an idiot.

I'm lucky I didn't lose my cylinder, the tooth fell off after about 5,000 Miles of use, weak.

I've heard this happen quite commonly which makes me worried in giving them a go... The Bosch seem to be fine even for highly tuned vehicles?
Question, would e85 negate the 'one step colder' plugs anyway?

I've used Bosch ones, tried NGK and didn't see improvments on the logs, so switched back to bosch.
I really like the OEM style bosch plugs.
Not sure if one step colder plugs are needed when you use high mix of ethanol.

I had one NGK break soon after installation, the ceramic part came loose and dropped down covering the tip.
Still using them though.

damn this makes me really hesitant to switch out my old plugs for the new NGKs I just got. I heard of that one guy melting one of his plugs but this seems like a reoccurring issue...

Terry,
I see BMS sells gapable NGKs already on the website,
I think it would be fantastic to sell already gaped ones,
As for me, i would like to test them, i'm getting little bit tuned step by step, and i dont have necessary tools to gap them,
what do you think about it?

Not trying to bring a thread back from the dead, but how many people experienced NGK's breaking while in use? Teeth falling off? Really?? I ordered NGKs the other day and now im pretty concerned about this.

NGK's Okay -
04-24-2017, 06:11 AM
I was reading through this thread because I was getting ready to replace the NGK 95770 plugs that I gapped to the recommended (by Terry) 0.022" when I installed them 56,000(!) miles ago and I was nearing the 60K CBM recommended replacement interval. I have not had a misfire on this set of plugs (and ignition coils) for all of those miles with the JB4 on maps 1 and 5.
Many of those miles were covered while driving with the cruise control on or in stop and go traffic during my 90-mile round trip to work each day. I mention that because there are limited opportunities in heavy traffic where I can watch the fuel come boost gauge show the JB4-enabled 15 psig that makes this engine so much fun.
During installation, I was careful when setting the gap to not damage the iridium "dots" on the plug tips and handled them like $13-a-piece jewelry to ensure that they were installed in good condition. I have had only positive experience with the NGK plugs in the N54/JB4 combination.
On the other hand, with the OEM Bosch plugs, I have had short-lived (20K) life spans before notable misfires under heavy boost.

The old rule is you can only drop a spark plug twice. Once on the ground, and once in a trash can.
It's easy to do while installing, but if you drop one it's best to trash it and get a new one. Sometimes you won't even know if they've been dropped before you receive them. Just wondering if this might have contributed to some of these failures.

NGK OK -
04-25-2017, 01:12 AM
I recently purchased and installed NGK spark plug from BMS. Although it is still running only about 100 miles, there is no problem such as misfire. I feel that the way of gap adjustment is a problem as a cause of failure. Since the spark plug is a very delicate part, if you adjust it roughly it feels like a tooth broken or a ceramic part is broken. It is also felt that using the spark plug which has been used once and the gap has been expanded and used again is high risk. Tips to not fail spark plug

A little off subject, but I'm going to install new Bosch plugs and coils.
I've seen NOT to use anti-sieze and/or dielectric grease on plugs and /or boots.
I've also seen to use only COPPER a/s and/or only a little bit of d/g on upper part of ceramic on plug.
What say you guys??
